Vice President Hillary Clinton?

What the what?
Washington (CNN) – Should President Obama drop Vice President Joe Biden from the 2012 Democratic ticket and instead run with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton? That's exactly what's being argued by Douglas Wilder, the former Gov. of Virginia.

"Clinton has been nothing but a team player who has earned good marks since being asked to serve as secretary of state. She has skillfully navigated the globe and been tough and commanding when the moment called for it ... Clinton is better suited as the political and government partner that Obama needs," Wilder argues. "I suggest this as one who vigorously supported Obama over Clinton in 2008. In fact, I campaigned across the country and engaged in spirited debates with former colleagues. I don't regret any of that. Yet, now I think Clinton brings bounty to the political table that few can match."
I see Mr. Wilder's point, but I disagree.

While I have to admit that Hillary Clinton has been doing a more-than-bang-up job as Secretary of State, I think that giving her the veep spot (and ousting Joe Biden) would be a terrible move for the President.

First of all, as I mentioned, Mrs. Clinton has been doing a great job in her current role in the administration. The old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies.

Secondly, and more importantly, the Vice President is indeed prone to Foot-In-Mouth Disease. However, that can work to the President's advantage. If some world crisis is occurring and you need the press to focus on something "shiny" for a couple of news cycles, just have Ol' Joe go give a speech in the Rose Garden. Tell him that he can pick the topic...

Surely he will place his foot squarely in his mouth, ensuring a Saturday Night Live sketch (or three), and thusly the media focuses it's attention on the VP, giving the President the opportunity to fix whatever problem is looming.

Maybe we should change the title to Vice President and Chief Distractor of the United States...
