Rep. Chris Lee Steps Down

Rep. Chris Lee resigned Wednesday evening after it was revealed that he sent suggestive photographs to a woman he met on the Internet.

Lee, an upstate New York Republican, was the subject of a Gawker story Wednesday morning that had him on Craigslist allegedly looking for a female companion despite having a wife and child. The picture in question had him posing with dress pants on and no shirt, and the Gawker story revealed a string of emails suggesting he was looking for women to meet on the Internet.

His resignation was stunning in how swift it came down — just hours after the suggestive photos of Lee appeared on the Internet. It was hardly enough time for the story to become a full blown scandal — the pictures posted after lunch and Lee was gone from Congress before the nightly news.

“It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of Western New York,” Lee wrote in a release he sent out hours after the story posted. “I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness.”

Well, I'll give the guy credit; he didn't waste any time. He could have dragged the scandal out, made it a national cable-news story, embarrassed his family and his office -- not to mention himself (Larry Craig, anyone?). Lee got out, and fast. Good for him.

But seriously folks -- who takes a picture like that (click on the image above and you'll see what I'm talking about), posts it on the Internet and thinks to himself, "Gee, I hope that nobody finds out about this...."
